Our First Fat Kid Adventure

Hi everyone! We are so excited to actually be posting something. We know we have been saying this for a while now, but now we are actually going to jump start our own asses and get to it. So, over the weekend we attended the First Annual, Springfield Rotary Gourmet Food Truck Competition aka our fat kid dreams had come true. There were 35 food trucks from Ohio and the surrounding areas of Kentucky and Indiana. There was also a truck from Williamsport, Maryland called Firehouse Crab Balls but let's not even talk about that. When we arrived at the festival it was 3:00pm and they had just announced that they were out of crab. I mean, how in the world are you a crab truck without any crab! Needless to say, we did not attempt to try any of their other food amongst out disappointment.

Sho Stopper
Golden Dog
The first truck we decided to try was Zombie Dogz which is a based out of Dayton, Ohio. This was the second longest line we waited in and it was definitely worth it. I ended up getting the Sho Stopper which was a hot dog topped with bulgogi beef, kimchi, asian slaw, peanut crumble, sriracha aioli, and scallions. I thought it was very good. Slightly sweet, yet savory with a decent amount of spice. The other dog we ordered was the Golden Dog which had a roasted corn and jalapeno salsa, cabbage, bacon, cumin-lime creme fraiche, and an avocado puree.

The next stop for us was Hunger Paynes which is from the Dayton area as well. They specialize in croquettes which is a ball of food, rolled up and deep fried. We decided to try the Spicy Arancini. I thought they were good but definitely not the best arancini I have had. The spicy sauce on it; however, was quite divine. It was made up of a red pepper puree which gave the usual marinara flavoring that comes with arancini a nice twist.

We then made our way over to Harvest Mobile Cuisine which is based out of Beavercreek, Ohio. Now unbeknownst to us at the time this was the winning truck and they won $10,000 for having the best food. Now this is not surprising as the winning item was their Land and Sea BLT which was fantastic! It consisted of Pork Belly, Salmon, heirloom tomatoes, a dijon aioli, goat cheese, and greens all on a ciabatta roll. The combination was celestial being that it was salty and flavorful with the salmon and pork belly and the goat cheese added a divine creaminess to the sandwich. I mean come on, pork belly and goat cheese alone could make anything great but all the aspects combined truly made this sandwich standout. Traditionally the sandwich was to be served with a type of quinoa salad but we opted for the medley of french fries which had a mix of both sweet and regular fries. These were really good as well as they were dusted with fresh herbs and was served with a sriracha ketchup which you can never go wrong with.

Lastly, we made our stop at Marty's Waffles. I was so excited about this stop as Amy knows because I started texting her about it on Monday, NBD. This line was the longest line we encountered as it passed by two other trucks. It was absolutely well worth the wait when we finally made it to the counter to order. I ordered the #3 which included The Original waffle with sea salt, caramel, and a bourbon whipped cream. It was delightful. The sweet and salty combination was done extremely well and the homemade bourbon whipped cream added a very rich and sugary touch. The other waffle we ordered was the # 2 which included The Original waffle with a blackberry and Grand Marnier Compote with a maple whipped cream.

All and all our trip was incredible and we cannot wait to attend the next annual Springfield Rotary Gourmet Food Truck Competition. Also, if Firehouse Crab Balls is going to be there, you had better come correct because now my expectations of these crab cakes are sky high.
